Why “deleted” apps still use disk space

Most Mac apps spread data across several locations: Application Support for databases, Caches for thumbnails, Preferences for settings, and sometimes LaunchAgents or Login Items for background helpers. macOS does not automatically remove these when you delete the app icon.

Over years, orphaned folders from old trials, beta builds, and renamed apps accumulate. How much space you recover depends on what you installed — measure leftovers on your own Mac instead of trusting a generic GB claim. Manual cleanup requires knowing bundle IDs and matching folder names, which is slow and easy to get wrong.

Where leftovers usually live

• ~/Library/Application Support/ — databases and app data
• ~/Library/Caches/ — regenerable cache bundles
• ~/Library/Preferences/ — .plist settings
• ~/Library/LaunchAgents/ — user-level background jobs
• ~/Library/Logs/ — optional diagnostic logs

Exact names vary by vendor. Prefer Trash-first removal and keep license files if you might reinstall.
